THE POLICE IN GTA VI: WHY IT NEEDS TO BE BETTER THAN GTA V
Discussing wanted levels, smarter AI, and the evolution of law enforcement in Leonida.
If there's one thing that feels truly dated in Grand Theft Auto V after all these years, it’s the police AI.
Don't get me wrong, it was fine for its time. But after a decade of GTA V and Online, the formula is entirely predictable: Do something illegal → get stars → cops swarm → hide in an alley → wait 30 seconds → completely forgotten.
With GTA VI aiming for next-generation immersion, the wanted system needs a massive overhaul. From what we've seen and heard so far, there is reason to hope Rockstar is taking it to the next level.
THE PROBLEM WITH GTA V'S COPS
In GTA V, the police possess a sort of magical omniscience. You can be hidden in a maze of alleyways, completely out of sight, and a cruiser will still spawn right around the corner driving directly toward you.
I'm not asking for a hardcore simulator, but I want logic. If an officer sees me, they should know my description. But if I commit a crime in a secluded area and escape before anyone spots me, I shouldn't instantly get a wanted level.
WHAT I WANT FROM GTA VI'S LAW ENFORCEMENT
Investigations, Not Just Spawns
Imagine pulling off a robbery and escaping without being identified. It shouldn't end there. Police should search the area, issue vehicle descriptions over the radio, and set up patrols based on where you were last seen. A major crime should trigger a real response, not just spawn cars on top of you.
Vehicle Tracking & License Plates
In GTA V, switching cars during a chase is mostly for speed or durability. In GTA VI, I want vehicle swapping to be a necessity. If the cops got a good look at your customized neon-pink sports car, driving past a cruiser five minutes later should trigger a response. You should have to ditch "hot" cars.
Disguises & Clothing Matter
The same logic should apply to Jason and Lucia. If you hold up a store, your outfit shouldn't just be cosmetic. Changing clothes, wearing masks, or dropping a jacket should actively reduce how easily you are recognized by passing patrols.
Security Cameras Everywhere
We are in the modern era. ATMs, gas stations, hotels, and traffic lights have cameras. It would be amazing if leaving your face exposed during a crime caused a delayed wanted level as the footage is reviewed. It would force players to actually plan their entry and exit.
WANTED LEVELS & TACTICS
The classic star system is the DNA of GTA, so it shouldn't disappear, but it needs to evolve:
- Regional Police - The VCPD in downtown Vice City should operate differently than the sheriff's department in the rural Kelly County swamps.
- Dynamic Roadblocks - Rather than the same static van blockades, I want to see dynamic spike strips, cops using traffic to box you in, and actual tactical routing.
- Helicopters as Spotters - Helicopters shouldn't just be floating turrets. They should use spotlights to track you and actively direct ground units to your location.
SMARTER (BUT FLAWED) AI
The AI shouldn't be perfect. I want cops to make mistakes to search the wrong street, lose sight of my car in heavy traffic, or get outsmarted if I pull into a dark garage and cut the engine.
Most importantly, I want escaping to feel earned. I don't want to lose a 5-star wanted level just by sitting in a bush. I want to lose it because I successfully swapped cars, changed my clothes, abandoned the search radius, and blended back into the crowd.
JOIN THE DISCUSSION
If I can shoot up downtown Vice City for 20 minutes, hide in a tunnel, and then walk back out to buy a hotdog like nothing happened... it's just GTA V again. I want GTA VI to make me say, *"Oh man... what did I just do?"*
